World Press Photo 2009 Winners Gallery

akmmmmmmmPicture 3.png

The world’s best photojournalism from 2008 is on display this morning as World Press Photo announced the winners of their competition. As always you’ll find the best and worst aspects of humanity in the gallery, like the stunning first place winner of the Daily Life category which features kids and a corpse. Start your day with a dose of great photojournalism. Click on the image above or below to see the gallery.

Here’s the World Press Photo of the year, by one of my favorite photographers Anthony Suau:

And here’s an article about Suau and the struggles of producing great photojournalism in today’s economic climate from PDN this morning. He also reveals he shot the World Press Photo of the year with a Leica loaded with Tri-X film.

Links: World Press Photo, PDN Photo Annual, Raw Take

Since I’ve got nothing right now (write now), here are a few of the best things from elsewhere.

1. World Press Photo Interviews. A new set of video interviews where the winners of the top international photojournalism competition talk about capturing their award-winning photographs.

2. PDN Photo Annual 2008 Gallery. Some of the best photography from the past year, collected into galleries. Advertising, Editorial, Books, Photojournalism/Sports/Documentary, Corporate, Personal Work, Stock, Web, Student Work. Always a great resource, and you can pick up a printed copy for around $12 at any bookstore. Get it quick.

3. Raw Take Interview with James Whitlow Delano. I’m always down for any photographer who goes out and does thing their own way, without regard to conventional wisdom. Delano’s style literally makes his black and white photographs glow. Along with the photographs is a thought-provoking interview, as Raw Take always seems to deliver.

If you want to keep up on stuff like this on a daily basis, you can always check out my link site The Click, which is updated continually.

Sports Shooter Contest – Chris Detrick

1962_1.jpeg

PICTURE OF THE YEAR: Pepperdine’s Jason Walberg, #12, gouges the eyes of Brigham Young University’s Jonathan Tavernari, #45, during the first half of the game. No foul was called on the play. Photo by Chris Detrick

If you’re not in the insular world of photojournalism, you may not be aware that Tribune photographer Chris Detrick is one of the most talented photojournalists in the world. Really. This spring’s award season has brought Chris a wheelbarrow of awards including a third place for his sports portfolio in the international World Press Photo competition. Chris’s photo above took first place just about everywhere, and today took top honors in Sports Shooter’s Annual Contest. From their site:

“It was a unanimous decision by the judges because it has everything that a winning sports action photo should have – peak action, impact, interesting subject matter, and good composition…” said contest judge Donald Miralle about Detrick’s photograph.

Chris will be representing us at this summer’s Olympics in Beijing.

Another Tribune award in the Sports Shooter contest was an Award of Excellence given to my “Run Forrest Run” photo:

The winners gallery is quite impressive, with many friends of the blog also winning. You can see the rest of the winning photos by clicking here.
