UNPA Awards Website

Skyline High School's basketball team dogpiles on Liz Johnson (15, bottom) after Johnson hit a last second shot to beat Davis and send Skyline to Saturday's State Championship game.

The UNPA website with galleries of the winning photographs, portfolios, and multimedia presentations is now online. Make sure you check out the portfolio of photographer of the year Ramin Rahimian. He’s shooting from the heart, for himself, and it shows in the work.

This marks the end of contest season for me. My UNPA tally—

1st place sports feature (the photo above)
2nd place multimedia
3rd place humor (should have entered it in sports feature)

My colleague and friend Rick Egan snags the Worst Photo award for the second year in a row and his third overall. I’ve got to do worse next year.

UNPA Awards Banquet

unpa2.jpg

Once we have the awards gallery website up I’ll post again about last night’s awards banquet for the Utah News Photographers Association. Easily the best banquet we’ve ever had. This year was super casual, hosted by Laura Seitz and catered by Red Iguana. Lots of friends and none of the tension from years past.

Freelancer Ramin Rahimian came into the competition with an amazing portfolio and took home the Photographer of the Year trophy. His parents must be so proud!

And I misspoke yesterday, Ramin’s win makes it EIGHT different photographers who’ve won the award in eight years. No repeat winners in eight years.

Thanks to Eli Lucero for putting this year’s contest together. It’s a ton of work that often goes unnoticed. Thanks to Brian Nicholson and Scott Winterton for help with the awards. Thanks to Laura for hosting. It was awesome.
