Assignment: Jenny Wilson

I was going to write up a big long post about the late great photographer Garry Winogrand and his approach, and how I’ve been thinking of my own work. Winogrand saw photo subjects as problems to be solved. It related well to this assignment, photographing Salt Lake County Council member Jenny Wilson as she was interviewed. There were a lot of photographic “problems” to be solved. For one thing I was faced with the cliche of the reflective table and wanted to tackle it in a different way.

My Winogrand thoughts took off and expanded to the point that they will now appear elsewhere. But I’ll link to that when it’s up.

It’s always weird coming back to work after a long vacation. It’s like the wheels still spin but it takes long to get anywhere. I had two weeks off over the holidays and was able to put work (work, not photography) mostly out of mind. Tuesday was my first day back. One assignment was to photograph the Salt Lake County Council’s caucus meeting at Millcreek Cafe. The group had decided to make its meetings public. To make sure I was an objective observer, I ordered a red meat Republican lunch:

Photographing people eating can be a little challenging. I managed to get a few shots off where people weren’t putting food in their mouths. We all know how unattractive that can be.

But then there are always a few shots that aren’t flattering or even accurate. They are better left unseen, like this one:
