Don’t tell my boss that I’m not editing that video I promised to finish. Instead, I’m over at the state basketball tournament shooting masterpieces like this:

and this…

Angela Chaudhari with her newborn twin sons Ashym and Aryan. I caught the candid moment above while we waited for Aryan to finish downing a bottle. Then we set up for your average portrait, but a family member in the background must have said something funny because Angela made that beautiful face of joy. Done.

I love square photos.
Over on my Fly on the Wall blog, a quick post on yesterday’s shoot of Utah Valley University basketball coach Dick Hunsaker with senior players Josh Olsen, Brett Ravenberg and Ryan Toolson. Check it out here.

I just wrote up a piece on covering a memorial to Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller. Click the photo to check it out…

Larry Miller and I crossed paths many, many times but never said more than a couple words to each other. Going through my archives I found many photos of Larry over the years. But this one is still my favorite. It ran in 1997 in a photo column I was doing at the time with the caption, “The Biggest Jazz Fan.”
Characters as large as Larry Miller are always missed. Here’s to you, Larry.

I was going to write up a big long post about the late great photographer Garry Winogrand and his approach, and how I’ve been thinking of my own work. Winogrand saw photo subjects as problems to be solved. It related well to this assignment, photographing Salt Lake County Council member Jenny Wilson as she was interviewed. There were a lot of photographic “problems” to be solved. For one thing I was faced with the cliche of the reflective table and wanted to tackle it in a different way.
My Winogrand thoughts took off and expanded to the point that they will now appear elsewhere. But I’ll link to that when it’s up.

Was told to get a shot of Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant for an All Star Game package. This shot was taken during the pre-game national anthem. It was great luck to have those stars on the video strip in the background. Bad luck, however, when the photo was not published.
