3rd Place – Humor

This post closes up contest season for the year. From the Stadium of Fire at BYU, this photograph took third place in the humor category of the Utah News Photographers Association’s Photojournalism competition.

The combination of the tank and the cheerleaders was just too much to resist. I shot so many frames trying to do the situation justice, but this was as close as I got to capturing it the way I wanted.

Here’s what the judge, Gerry McCarthy, said:

Absurdity again (seeing a pattern here?). There’s something incredibly chaotic about this in a way that made me laugh out loud. It’s such an unbelievable, unlikely scene. But all the elements really come together to satire patriotism in a way that is just so true. What’s more American than tanks and rosy-cheeked cheerleaders? Throw a McDonald’s sign somewhere in the background and you have the next picture for the $20 bill.
